Journal 2
Since I can remember, I recall using MS Word in elementary schools to make creative projects like brochures for places or flyers about math vocabulary in my classroom. As I got older, in middle school I used Word for writing essays and creating study guides. Eventually, I began to use MS Word for all my different tasks like taking notes, writing papers, and even writing my resume. As a student, MS Word has given me one platform that makes it easy and convenient to complete any assignment needed. Over the years I have also seen my teachers use MS Word in different ways. Some teachers would use Word to create directions for an assignment for a project we had, some created their tests on it, and some even created calendars for the quarter or semester with upcoming dates. MS Word has undoubtedly made an positive impact in education and for the lives of students and teachers.
My experience with copyright and fair use of materials compares to those of most students around the world. From a young age we are told to create or own pieces of work and as students, if we wanted to include any other information from pieces of text we must put them in quotations or reword the phrases. I always try to follow this rule and make sure that I am not stealing anyone else's work. However, there are moments where my wording sounds similar to another text or I forget to cite and that is definitely something I need to work on. As a teacher, I will strive to maintain my same values in wanting to produce only original work and give credit to others if needed. I would also enforce the same things my teacher's said to me in that copyrighting is a form of stealing and can become very serious if not handled appropriately at a young age.
For copyright problems, to solve this problem in my classroom I would propose that if anything is fully copyrighted and taken I would give my student a zero and if a lot of parts wee copyright from another source I would remove points. I understand that mistakes can be made and that sometimes things are overseen, but I believe this proposition would encourage students to submit only their work. In addition, for the issue of academic honesty I would create more than one form for an exam so that way students do not cheat or replicate another students work. Lastly, a solution that I would try to implement in my classroom to fix this issue would be to get to know my students on a personal level and gain a relationship where I am able to see the signs and help them them with this problem. This would also help the student feel more comfortable with coming to me whenever they are feeling threatened or bullied.
